Academy Award Nominees

The nominees for the 81st Annual Academy Awards® have been announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Creators of a backwards-aging man, a joker, and a demon hero all vie for the Oscar®.

Greg Cannom received a nomination for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (see Issue 76 of Make-Up Artist magazine). This is Cannom’s ninth Academy Award® nomination, and he previously won for Mrs. Doubtfire (1994, with Ve Neill and Yolanda Toussieng) and Dracula (1993, with Michèle Burke and Matthew Mungle).

John Caglione, Jr. and Conor O’Sullivan were nominated for The Dark Knight (Issue 73 of Make-Up Artist magazine). Caglione won an Oscar® in 1991 for Dick Tracy, along with Doug Drexler. O’Sullivan was previously nominated in 1999 for Saving Private Ryan, along with Lois Burwell and Daniel C. Striepeke.

Mike Elizalde and Thom Floutz received nominations for Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (Issue 73 of Make-Up Artist magazine). This is the first Oscar® nomination for both Elizalde and Floutz. Saturn Award-winner Elizalde (2005, Hellboy), will talk about his experiences at this year’s International Make-Up Artist Trade Show in London, Jan. 24 and 25. Floutz won an Emmy® award in 2002 for Six Feet Under, along with several other prosthetic designers and make-up artists.
